Suzanne Smith is based near Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2006 with BA (Hons) in Design. She now combines teaching with making and selling her creations. She enjoys making jewellery, mixed media & textile artworks from a variety of found, reclaimed and reused materials from her collections.
Inspiration is found in many places. From secret walled gardens to theatre visits, flea markets to flower stands, she very much enjoys collecting and keeping images of these places to work from. Haberdashery, tiny trinkets, antiques and artefacts are sought out and brought home. In another life, she would have been an archaeologist or historian, discovering and preserving remnants of the past. In this one though, she is happy to create little wonders that may become future heirlooms or the treasured possessions of like minded souls.
When working in her vintage caravan studio, she endeavours to give new life to old fabrics by hand dying and stitching, adding papers, paints, felt and found objects to her creations. There are very rarely two items the same. Everything is a little different each time and due to the nature of the materials used, often totally unique.
